Monster Emerald Gets Zero Bids
A Canadian auction house said a watermelon-sized gem believed to be the world’s largest emerald failed to gain a single bid after its co-owner was arrested. Western Star Auctions of Kelowna, British Columbia, said there were no offers for the 57,500-carat green stone, which weighs 25 pounds, after a memo was given to bidders at the Saturday auction explaining that co-owner Regan Reaney had been arrested Friday on charges unrelated to the emerald. Reaney was arrested on outstanding warrants from multiple fraud charges from Hamilton, Ontario. Odenbach, owner of Western Star Auctions, said the future of the emerald is up to the consignors.
