A
previously unnamed species of horse fly has now been given a moniker in
honor of singer Beyoncé – because the insect is “the all-time diva of
flies,” researchers said. Bryan Lessard, a researcher from Commonwealth
Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Australia, is
responsible for the fly’s official name – Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae.
“It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly’s abdomen that led me
to name this fly in honor of the performer Beyoncé as well as giving me
the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy – the naming of
species,” Lessard said. He added that Beyoncé would be “in the nature
history books forever” and that the fly now bearing her name is “pretty
bootylicious” with its golden backside. Other celebrities that have
insects named after them include Jerry Garcia’s wood roach, Greta Garbo
and Harrison Ford, who has two – a spider and ant.
